SLM Boutique is a saree house in Erode — the town Tamil Nadu calls its loom city, where the Kaveri runs past dyeing yards and the market opens before the light does.
Why Erode
Erode has been a textile town for generations. Cotton comes in raw, and leaves as yarn, as dyed cloth, as finished drapes carried to markets across India. Powerlooms and handlooms work side by side here; whole streets are given over to dyeing, printing and finishing. If you want to understand how a saree is actually made — not the story of it, the making of it — this is where you stand and watch.
Being based here means we buy at the source. No layer of agents, no cartons bought sight unseen. Fabric is chosen off the roll, in daylight, by hand.
How we choose
Every drape in this collection has been through the same three questions.
- How does it fall? A saree that will not pleat cleanly is not a saree, whatever the print looks like flat.
- How does it wear? Tamil Nadu is hot for most of the year. A drape has to breathe through a working day, not just through a photograph.
- How does it hold? Colour after washing, border after pressing, zari after a season in the cupboard.
What does not pass, we do not stock. It is a smaller collection because of that, and we would rather it stayed that way.
What you are buying
Tissue and tussar-finish drapes for weddings and festival days. Silk cottons with contrast borders for the office. Pure cottons and jute blends for the days that ask the most of you. Most pieces are stocked in small numbers — often a single length — so what you see is genuinely what is left.
